When considering dating your friend’s ex, you need to know the potential consequences and repercussion this could have. If you proceed with this pursuit, be alert and have a very clear understanding of what you’re getting into. Why does this happen in the first place? It typically starts in high school when students hang out in groups. Some of these group settings include couples that are dating. Occasionally, one member of a couple starts to feel attraction for a member of another couple. These groups usually create close friendships with a good level of trust established! In spite of this established comfort amongst each other, there’s a great chance some group members will date their friend’s ex at some point. While this may seem exciting for the new couple, it can also make things very awkward, if they are still involved in the same social circle! As we become adults, the same principles apply in the workplace. Just like high school, most companies have similar groupies that spend lots of time together! Between the workdays and at events / functions arranged by their employer, awkward situations could arise in the same ways as in high school groups.
What is the best way to avoid these uncomfortable situations? The simple answer is dating people from other high schools besides the one you attend, or date outside of your current workplace for us older folks! I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “Don’t Mix Business with Pleasure!” That should speak for itself! At the end of the day, if you strongly feel the desire to date a friend’s ex, be prepared for anything to happen, and I mean anything! Your best defense when encountering uncomfortable situations is handling them as maturely as possible! Naturally, if things are meant to be with your friend’s ex, everything will eventually fall into place.
